Found flitting through forest edges, clearings, and even vibrant gardens, spotting this miniature marvel is a true highlight for any birdwatcher in Costa Rica. The males boast that unmistakable spiky black crest and iridescent green back, often pausing just long enough for you to catch a gasp before they zip away. Females are equally captivating, though they lack the dramatic headgear.

Their rapid flight and preference for certain flowering plants make them a thrilling challenge to photograph and observe. But the reward of seeing that crest catch the light is absolutely worth the patience!

Have you been lucky enough to spot this tiny treasure in Costa Rica? Or perhaps another unforgettable hummingbird?
